Delectable German Fish Patties: A Flavorful Adventure from the Sea

Fischfrikadellen, or fish patties, are a popular dish in Germany and other parts of Europe. These patties are made from ground fish, which is mixed with various spices and other ingredients to create a delicious and healthy meal.

Fish is a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for a healthy diet. Fischfrikadellen are a great way to incorporate fish into your diet in a tasty and interesting way. They are also easy to make, and can be served as a main dish or as a side dish with other foods.

To make fischfrikadellen, you will need a few ingredients, including fish (usually cod or tilapia), bread crumbs, eggs, onions, salt, pepper, and a few other spices. The fish is typically ground or finely chopped, and then mixed together with the other ingredients in a large bowl. The mixture is then formed into patties, which are then cooked in a pan or baked in the oven.

One of the great things about fischfrikadellen is that they are very versatile. You can experiment with different types of fish, spices, and other ingredients to create your own unique recipe. Some people like to add chopped vegetables, such as carrots or zucchini, to their fischfrikadellen for extra flavor and nutrition.

What to serve with Fischfrikadellen

Fischfrikadellen can be served in a variety of ways. They can be eaten on their own, or they can be served with a side salad, mashed potatoes, or other vegetables. Some people like to serve them with a dipping sauce, such as tartar sauce or aioli, to add an extra burst of flavor. I personally like to eat them with my German Cucumber Salad or my Country Style Pan Fried Potatoes.

What fish to use

Any firm white fish fillets suitable for pan frying will work here. Even salmon will work great! Here’s are suggestions for common fish common in the US that is ideal for these fish cakes:

  • Tilapia, Cod, Alaskan pollock, Catfish.

Fish to avoid

  • Fish that dries out easily – this includes king fish, tuna, sword fish, mahi mahi.
  • Oily fish that also tends to have quite a “fish” flavour, as sardines, mackerel and river trout.
  • Fish that’s too small or delicate for this recipe. This includes: Bream, Whiting, John Dory, Orange roughy (deep sea perch), Flounder, Sole, Turbot, Halibut, Monkfish / Stargazer (well, it works, but it’s a premium fish so I wouldn’t waste it on fish cakes!

Summary

Overall, fischfrikadellen are a delicious and healthy dish that are easy to make and very versatile. They are a great way to incorporate fish into your diet and experiment with different flavors and ingredients. So why not give them a try and see what kind of unique recipe you can come up with?
