Ingredients

Fish & Seasoning

  • 2 fish fillets herring, mackerel, or firm white fish
  • Ground pepper to taste

Sandwich Components

  • 2 Kaiser rolls lightly toasted
  • 4 leaves coral lettuce or lettuce of choice
  • 1/2 cucumber thinly sliced
  • 1 red onion sliced into rings
  • 2 tbsp remoulade or mayo optional

Instructions

  • Season the Fish: Pat fish fillets dry with paper towels. Season both sides with salt and ground pepper. Let sit for a few minutes.
  • Choose Your Method: If using pre-marinated herring or mackerel, skip cooking. If cooking fillets, heat a frying pan over medium-high heat with a drizzle of oil. Cook fish for about 3-4 minutes per side until opaque and flakes easily.
  • Prep the Roll: Lightly toast your Kaiser rolls for extra crunch. Spread with remoulade or mayo, if desired.
  • Assemble: Place coral lettuce leaves on the bottom half of each roll. Lay the seasoned or cooked fish on top, followed by cucumber slices, red onion rings, and more ground pepper if you like a kick.
  • Serve Immediately: Cap each sandwich with the top half of the roll. Enjoy your fresh, flavorful Fischbrötchen while it’s still crispy and warm.

Notes

Storage: Best enjoyed fresh. If needed, store ingredients separately and assemble just before eating.
Variations: Add dill pickles, lemon juice, or mustard for extra tang. Experiment with different fish like salmon or cod.
Tip: Make sure to remove any pin bones from the fish fillet for a smooth eating experience.
